I need help installing Mandrake 10.0 Official. The following is a list of the steps that I have taken.
1) Download 3 ISO image files

Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD1.i586.iso
Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD2.i586.iso
Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD3.i586.iso

2) I used the MD5sums tool to verify ISO files. The MD5sums tool created a 32 digit md5sum that matched the listed numbers.

3) Burn them onto CD as ISO image files

4) Boot with CD 1

If I boot with CD 1, I receive the following error:

error in exec of stage 2 :-(
trying to execute '/user/bin/runinstall2' from the installation volume
the following fatal error occured
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE 1: I/O error
I can't recover from this.
You may reboot your system

So I then tried booting with CD 2 and then inserted CD 1. However, I received the same error.

Can someone please help me by providing directions on how to install Mandrake 10.0?

I burned the ISO image files at 10X, should I burn them slower?

Thanks,

I think that at least CD 1 is bad. Try to burn another one. As far as the speed, that is a function of the discs you have. At 10x they better be at least 16x compatible.

I burned disks again at 4X (the disks are 52X Multi Speed CD-R).

What am I doing wrong? Is there a specific way to install Mandrake 10.0.

I checked sums again and all was o.k.
I have Win XP Pro installed. Do I first have to partition my HD before booting with Mandrake Linux disk 1? Or does partition come after booting with disk 1?

PLEASE HELP

Do I have to partition my HD before installing Mandrake? If so, can someone please help me in either providing or pointing me to the appropriate steps to install Mandrake 10.0 official? I am new to Linux, so sorry for my lack of knowledge.

UPDATE and Revision

I am downloading Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official ISO images for i586 and higher
from http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3#586

The site states the following:
MD5 checksum:

ad3d50fe12c0672a7e4d32b466ab6851 Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD1.i586.iso
a64fbcb98d6aa2cd4ac287e563593678 Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD2.i586.iso
bf7a7dad80cf3f41453d572d3ffed09b Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD3.i586.iso

After running the MD5 Checksum, I obtained different numbers than the ones above. However, the MD5 checksum tool didn't flag any errors during the test. Might this be the problem that the numbers that I generated during the MD5 test, don't match the above numbers? Nevertheless, I am re-downloading the files and will post my results shortly.

Sorry for my Linux illiteracy.

Thanks,

md5sum just generates a number.
It doesn't know a reference - the correct/ expected number.
It will not tell you that something is wrong, you have to verify it by eye.

(If the number was included in the files, it could be manipulated too. Since a different number would lead to a different md5sum, how should it be stored?)

So if the numbers generated dont match the included numbers, then the files are corrupted?

I honestly don't know how to use the MD5sums tool. I first selected files and clicked on "create sums." I then chose md5 file and clicked on "verify sums." I then clicked on save after "verify sums" and clicked on save results as txt. The results were:
Mandrakelinux-10.1-Community-Download-CD1.i586.iso OK
Mandrakelinux-10.1-Community-Download-CD2.i586.iso OK
Mandrakelinux-10.1-Community-Download-CD3.i586.iso OK

What am I looking for, what are the numbers or the file that I have to check?

PLEASE HELP

A well - if there is a tool for verifying the sums, and tells you 'OK', I would trust in it.

I don't know a click-tool - I only know md5sum, and there you pass a file as argument

and it will show the checksum and the filename.

A difference in the md5sum will mean corrupted.
A random-error will by nearly no possibility result in the same md5sum.
And if someone is changing the file with bad intentions, he has nearly no chance, to modify it further (by adding useless information), to generate the same sum, even by brute force.
I guess if an algorithm is found, to help faking an md5sum, there will be loud noise in the web about this issue.

O.K. I finally got the hang of the md5sum command line tool. Unfortunately, every single file that I have downloaded has generated a different sum number. The sum numbers don't match the displayed numbers on the asc file.
What Gives?

Also, do I have to first partition my HD before proceeding with the Mandrake installation?
