Well, I made the switch, again, for now. I installed Ubuntu Linux yesterday and have been very pleased with the results so far. I won't go into detail here as I have already blogged about it, so read that if you are interested. I plan on running dual boot for a while to get used to it and to not lose what I had (Windows) in case an emergency comes up (like I have to play a game). But for now it is going very well minus a couple of insignificant non-issues. Eventually I hope to shrink my Windows partition down just big enough to play a couple of games I can't live without and for testing apps on more than 1 platform.

I have an old laptop well past it's use-by date which I recently converted to Fedora (3 then 4) with ethe resier file system. It gave it the kick it needed to be useful for a while longer, and the experience has been good. It sounds similar to you where I had a few non-issues and life goes on. I did manage to get a game or two runing with Wine

Thanks for this post Gregg.

I gave Ubuntu Linux "live" a whirl on my laptop last night (IBM Thinkpad A31m) and it all seemed great, no issues with graphics card (my mine concern), all other hardware seemed to be detected with no issues either.

I'll probably take the plunge and turn my laptop into a dual boot system soon.

Cheers.
