Well, also now you got that xmlHttpRequest - you can use it too.
Another fun way to do it will be to turn all your pages to xml and use XSLT to transform it - the common file will be part of template.
Also, you can use "document.write" to output all that info from common file - this way you put header into js file and use script tag to include it on every page.
