xsl:document, & treefrag conv to node-set

Can someone help, please? A little question on Xalan xsl 1.1 ...
I cannot get the nodeset function to work (I want to apply templates to the result of a previous template. Note that templates return treefrags, but require node-set as input.)
I've tried...

 <xsl:apply-templates select="xalan:nodeset($varContainingTreeFrag)">
error: TransformerException: Prefix must resolve to a namespace: xalan

<xsl:apply-templates select="nodeset($varContainingTreeFrag)">
error: TransformerException: Could not find function: nodeset

<xsl:apply-templates select="xalan:$varContainingTreeFrag">
XPathException: Can not convert #RTREEFRAG to a NodeList! 

According to several books, version 1.1 is supposed to allow tree frags to convert to nodesets.
How? Is there something missing in the Xalan configuration?

The solution is to include this namespace...

<xsl:stylesheet . . .
xmlns:xalan="http:xml.apache.org/xalan" ...
