XPath Vs XPointers

I have not used XPointers in any project.I am learning about these as because I am preparing for IBM 142 examination.

I could not find any reason for creation of XPointers specification.Whatever it does can be done with XPath.

Like for example XPointers can be used to specify a fragment of XML document in XLinks , that I think can be done by XPath also , why XPointers ?

The W3C XPointer recommendation specifically talks about XPointer extensions to XPath.
