I appeared for IBM 140 yesterday and cleared it with 70%. I have some suggestions/details about the exam if anybody is interested.
I have been a silent observer of this site for the last few months and I really appreciate the efforts putforth by Ajit, Mapraputa and others.

Wow! Congratulations. Believe me it is not easy to score even 70% and so you should be proud of your achievement.
While the experience is still fresh in your memory, why not summarize it including your method of preparation, the books/resources that you used and any tips/advices to fellow ranchers?? I'm sure it will be appreciated greatly by others.
Congratulations again and try to hang around and help others when you can.
Good luck,
Ajith

Ooooooooooh...
Congratulations, Darsh!
I have some suggestions/details about the exam if anybody is interested.
You must be kidding! Audience in impatience!
Particularly, Big Blue said that we will have 90 minutes for approximately 74 questions So how close number of questions was to 74? Did you have time to actually read all questions?
Congratulations again!

O.K. here are some details.
Total Time:
Took about 4 weeks to prepare for this exam working approx. 3 to 4hrs. per day. The primary goal was to learn the new technology as much as I can and then appear for the exam when I felt comfortable. Last week I took Brainbench XML test to gauge where I stand and did reasonably well. Its like comparing apples to oranges but brainbench exam may still provide some practice you badly need for IBM exam.
Books referred:
I referred several different books and websites as there is not one single book which you can completely rely on for this exam.
Professional XML: Too Verbose
XML Bible: O.K. but examples are very lengthy
Applied XML: Talks too much about DOM and it is outdated
Inside XML: Could not explore much.
XML in a nutshell: Concise and more recent information barring some silly typos(*,? and + in DTDs)
XML How To Program: Reasonable
Real Exam(Is it tough?): Ninety minutes and seventy four questions gives you one minute and 12 seconds to answer a question on average. There are several questions which may take about a minute just to read and comprehend . Questions are randomly distributed. My observation of the complexity:
5% Easy
30% Medium
60% Complex
5% Very Complex
Concept, Concept and Concept: I felt that there was not much you have to really cram to take this test as long as the concepts are clear.
Thanks.

Sorry I forgot to reply Mapraputa's questions. Yes I did manage to answer all 74 questions. I did not get a chance to revisit any question though. Exactly after 60 minutes I realized that I was spending too much of time on design questions and was really lagging behind. At the end I had 12 minutes left and 20 questions still to go. Thats when I got a few straightforward questions which helped me get back into the game. All in all it was a little overwhelming!
But hey "Alls well which ends well!"

Thanks Sanjay. The only so called mock exams I tried was the IBM sample questions and the exam from Ajith and Mapraputra.

Mock exam provided by Ajith is really good for nothing if he can't keep updating with new questions. Sorry folks, haven't had much free time lately. I am still trying

Hi Darshan,
Congrate for your great succ!!!
I am currently preparing for IBM 140 and wil appear on 04/22/2001 I have been preparing thru the books and some of the W3Cschools materials. However they are fine as far as syntactically knowing XML and other components.
After looking at the 140 sample qtns I realized that thye are mostly theoritical not like JAVA2 where they ask code.
Curretly I am referring XML bible & Inside XML.
Can you pls. let me know,
1. how I should prepare my self?
2. where can I get more practice papers?
3. what are the topics I need to concentrate more?
My object is to clear the test, because currently that's all I need.
Thank you so much for all your timely help and co-operation!!
-Kartikey

Thanks Kartikey. I wish you All The Best for your exam. I am guessing you are taking it on 5/22/2001. To get some more information on what I did for this exam you can read my earlier posts. Also, you can go to http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum31/HTML/000367.html where Ajith has posted his tips. Oh! BTW: My first name is Darsh not Darshan.
Thanks
