No, HF series do not have any book about J2ME... So the best book until now for the SCMAD exam is Wireless Java, Second Edition of Jonathan...

Hope this helps...

Bert seems no plans on HF SCMAD, and thus, you might consider J2ME The Complete Reference.

Mmm... J2ME The Complete Reference might be a good alternative to Jonathan's book, since it covers the most updated versions of the specs that are required in the exam... But if I am not wrong, the book is a bit thick...

Surprisingly enough, it seems the opposite, at least here in the UK. There are more job requirements for J2ME developers than actuallyl people available.

Hey Guys -

We really, really want to write this book! We keep watching the market to see when we think we'd sell enough books to break even

As soon as we think the market is ready, we'll jump in

- Bert

p.s. If someone could talk Nokia into buying some copies up front...

Breaking even shouldn't be difficult if you selfpublish it as an electronic book. No fixed costs. Except your valuable time of course.

I'd buy it.

I don't think HF authors will do this...

Why not, let's say one asks 50 bucks a copy and sells a 1000, you do the math.

There are at least 2 known issues. The 1st issue is the size of the book in electronic format. As you know, HF series are full of graphics, and thus, it is too difficult for the author to prepare the e-version. Of course, they can provide DVD version or download version, but then, I believe there will be other problems encountered.

The 2nd issue is the copyright. It is more easiler for someone to crack the PDF format and distribute it. So, might be only 10 being sold out, but more than 1000 people who get the copy. On the other hand, it is not that easy and time consuming for one to photocopy the book and distribute it.

Hm, interesting, I wouldn't need a book in the HF format though.
A well structured "regular" book would be nice. A Knudsen type book with extra stuff to cover all objectives would be good enough for me.

Another motivator for Bates et al.: if you wait long enough the competition might be getting ahead of you.

Then why are you asking for a book from HF series?
I don't think books from HF series will be in a normal format... That's what they call "unique" among other technical books...

Everybody is still watching on SCMAD market... If there are very few people taking this exam, the publisher wouldn't take a risk to publish a SCMAD exam-specific book...

I do believe that there are many authors who can write a SCMAD exam-specific book, but they will not take a risk on the ROI...

No not now... Well, I need to wait and watch the SCMAD market like Bert first... I don't think I can write the whole book alone... I might need to accompany with someone who has experience in writing books...

Hi Bert,

If all went well, I might work at NOKIA and do something about J2ME. Since I do not have deep knowledge of J2ME I want to go for the SCMAD.

If I get the job, I do my very best that NOKIA buys some books

Anyhow, let see what the future brings us.

I think the best book to get you through the SCMAD exam is really:
"Programming Wireless Devices with the Java2 Platform, Micro Second Edition"
from the Sun Java series, by Roger Riggs (Editor), Antero Taivalsaari, Jyri Huopaniemi, Mark Patel, James VanPeursem, Aleksi Uotila

Its very close to MIDP/CLDC specs, and saves you a lot of work in digging up information. It covers every SCMAD topic except JTWI, WMA and MMAPI which you can go through by the JSRs.

However, its not a "programmers book" like Knudsens "Wireless Java". Which one you like best, it depends on your style and depth of study.

I bought the book by Knudsen. I am on page 105. As far as I can judge its a quite good book. Please have in mind that I just started to learn for this exam.
