For appearing in Web Component Developer exam, is it necessary to complete some pre-requisites ? If I appear for JDK1.4 programmer certification, can I take this Web Component developer ? I read in SUN's site that this course path is taken by people who have completed JDK1.2 certification.
Any suggestions ?

You have to be an SCJP first. See this link

The link claims that you need to have passed SCJP 1.2 -- not 1.4. Any idea why?

I have an idea... Sun is just too lazy to update their pages .

I'm confused, are you saying the programers certification that I passed in Februrary of this year is not going to count for the pre-requisite portion of having been certified for the java 2 platform?
Please don't tell me I have to study for another programer's certification test.

Hi,
As Sun told me by email, SCJP1.2 and SCJP1.4 are both qualified to take the exam of SCWCD. They won't tell me how long would that be.
But my guess is, they will take out the SCJP1.2 sooner or later. Probably a couple of month later, only SCJP1.4 will be qualified.
So if you are SCJP1.2, you better start your SCWCD right away, instead of waiting for 2 more years to take the next step.
The same for SCJD.

You really think it would be in a "couple" months? I doubt I will be ready for hte WCD exam in just a couple months. I would hate to get two months into my study and then find out I have to take the other exam again (yes there is a lot I'd have to brush up on again to take it).
Do you think Sun would tell me exactly how long I have before the cert I got in February is no longer valid?
Thanks

You may try to call Sun, ask and dig it out.
Emailing them usually takes too long to get a satisfactory response.
And Sun has already made a upgrade exam for SCJP1.2 to upgrade to SCJP1.4, exam cost $100. Judged from that point, I guess SCJP1.2 will be nothing sooner or later.

Both the 1.2 platform and 1.4 platform
programmer exam is considered a satisfactory
pre-requisite for the SCWCD exam.
That information came from a representative
at Sun.

Yes, but the question I have is "for how long?" I guess I will try to call Sun. I doubt I will get a definitive answer though.

Nope, I don't think you will get a definite answer. I emailed the same concern to SunEd and received this reply:
"At this time, there is no time frame for how long the SCJP2 (1.2) will be considered as a valid pre-req qualification for the SCWCD exam. Our certification site will have that information posted as soon as it comes
available. You will be able to view this information at: http://suned.sun.com/US/certification."
To their credit though, I did receive this reply very soon after sending it

Ok, I'm sure this is going to be one of those RTFM type questions or at least "Search the archives", but feel free to just ignore the question..yes I'm lazy now while at work so I'm asking it none the less ...
What is the average time frame people take to prepare for this exam? I've been coding in JSP for about 2 1/2 years now and been coding with Struts for the past 6 months. I haven't coded my own tags but have looked briefly at how they are done. Haven't looked at EJBs at all. Use MVC architecture principles. Yes, I will start digging through the posts here in this forum so I'm sorry for posting this. I wasn't aware that my SCJP2 certification could expire soon so now I'm more pressed to thinking about getting this next test conquered. I can probably realistically spend about 12 hours/ week studying so just curious at what type of time frame this might bring to in learning enough to do pretty well on this test. Feel free to e-mail me off list if this question is too far OT.
thanks

Rick, I'm the best yardstick around. I've no experience with Servlet or JSP programming whatsoever, get about 10 hours a week study (and that's on the bus to work and back each day, if you have young kids you'll understand), and hope to sit the exam by the end of 2002. This was my approach for SCJP2 as well, of which I had no prior experience either.
That gives me about 4 months to hope that Sun doesn't invalidate SCJP1.2 as a valid pre-req for SCWCD.
Oh yes, I also only have about 4 braincells that are active at any given time, especially on the bus.

he he..I understand. No kids yet, but I understand Drop me an e-mail some time, maybe we can push each other to study... I certainly can use the push. I guess buying some books first might help as well.

I wouldn't worry about Sun invalidating the 1.2 Programmer exam as a pre-requisite, when the scwcd exam was first introduced we got someone at Sun to accept the 1.1 exam as a valid pre-requisite and Bill Gates had 640k of ram on his PC when that was hot.

I would buy a voucher now, when I am sure that 1.2 qualifies. The voucher is valid for 1 year and that should give most people enough time to take the exam.

Good idea. Get the voucher. Besides securing your 1.2 pre-req, its also adds a certain amount of urgency towards your study goals.

Just purchased a voucher for the SCWCD exam, and was told that it expires on 31 May 2003. Just a bit less than 9 months from now.
Could it be that 31 May 2003 is the 1.2 expiry date as well? Or it may just be the rules of Sun Education in Australia, where I purchased the voucher

I was told by a Sun rep that the new vouchers are not good for one year, but for a shorter term of 9 months.

I bought a SCWCD voucher a month or so ago, and I'm only a SCJP1.1 (back in 1998, that's all you could get !) I don't think they really care, they just want people to take (and pay for) the SCJP as well.
