Does anyone know how the market looks for people with knowledge of STRUTS instead of just J2EE knowledge?
Is STRUTS a preferred knowledge yet with employers? Or is it still too new?

Most of the jobs I've seen in my area require both. I haven't seen any that required Struts without J2EE.

I wouldn't imagine STRUTS would be required without J2EE but rather Vice Versa.

Hi,
Yes learn Strut in conjunction with J2EE is a good time investment.
Cheers,

But my question is specifically are employers looking for STRUTS in todays market? I know it is worth my time.

Of what I've heard... Struts is mandatory for any Java developer. A good knowledge of Struts is extremely valuable considering the fact that most Java based web systems are going down that path

I disagree 100%! What what I've seen and heard struts is very important and useful for those doing web applications in Java. For those who do not, you can get along just fine without it.

Are you talking about the tag library or the framework?

Why would you use the TAGLIB and not the framework? I am talking about STRUTS. Everything that is STRUTS.

Hi Greg,
One company on top of my head using Struts is EDS. They are in conversing Natural ADABAS to Java.

STRUTS in not too new or cutting edge. They want five years experience with JSTL too.

Geez, where do you get 5 years experience in these technologies? That is if everyone is wanting 5 years experience, where are the entry level positions? But that is another thread all together.

Gregg, I am recently coming off of an extensive job search (I was laid off March 1, then landed a job in mid-April). I know having experience with Struts helped me land the job that I have. Although the company wasn't using Struts, they were very interested in finding out what I knew about it, because they had future plans on using it.
During the job search, I had five on-site interviews (not counting phone screens and recruiter calls).
Three of those wanted someone with Struts knowledge.
One only wanted someone who could write back-end services, so no struts.
One couldn't spell Struts.
Besides the interviews, I also found out lots of information thru networking, recruiters, phone interviews, etc. Here is what I found.
Small j2ee shops are already embracing struts, they have been there, done that.
Large companies are a little slower to accept an open source solution (some will never accept it). Of the bigger companies I spoke with, only one was actually using Struts, although a few more had plans to do so in the future.
So, to answer your question, I think Struts will definitely make you a more attractive prospect. Especially if you are targeting larger, more established companies. As more of these organizations start using struts, the market for struts-aware developers will boom.

Having been on both sides of the hiring of web developers (as a candidate and as the hiring manager), I'd say that having Struts experience on your resume won't hurt and could certainly help. It demonstrates that you have a basic understanding of how Model 2 web applications are structured, which for me, is very important when considering a candidate.
Now that said, I personally would never actually use Struts in a project (this may be blasphemy to its followers, but I think it's a great idea, but badly implemented), but the patterns it is based upon are very important for Java Web Developers to understand. So even though none of my projects would ever use Struts, candidates who have experience with it would be of interest since they could apply that knowledge even in non-Struts Model 2 web apps.
hth,
bear

Back here in India, lot of companies are asking for Struts besides J2EE; with a tag - "knowledge of struts would be preferred".
Struts are interesting indeed.
