Diff between JNDI and LDAP

what is the differnece between jndi ldap. As it is said that websphere application server uses its own registery to register objects. Can i use some other registery (other than that of websphere) to register the objects.

LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a protocol for accessing a directory service while JNDI is an API for accessing an abstract directory service. For example, your Java code can use the JNDI API for browsing a directory service while the data moves between your code and the service using the LDAP protocol.
