Edvins,
Lulu is a "self publishing" site. Sometimes authors decide to publish themselves without going through a traditional publisher like O'Reilly or Manning. Lulu helps out with that.

Lulu.com is an on demand publisher with the benefits of very low start-up cost, better loyalty, distribution services etc. There are number of other Java/J2EE books published via Lulu.com. Go to http://www.lulu.com and search for Java J2EE to see other books. I am very happy with their set up and services. They do provide markeing services (I do my own google adwords) as well.

Does the above mean that the entire traditional "publishing process" (editing, presentation, probably a number of other aspects) is left to the author?

As far as I know, you have to submit it ready for typesetting.

Lulu seems to be getting a lot of attention lately.

You upload your content, Front & rear cover pages, set your loyalty, set up your profile etc and Lulu will take care of the rest at no set up cost. You only need to pay (cost price + delivery) for the finsihed product to be produced and delivered to you for proof reading prior to opening it to public.

You need to pay some small amount like $200.0 to buy the ISBN and distribution to Amamzon, Barnes & Noble and many more. Lulu will give you a customizable shop front for you to promote your book.

You can monitor your sales etc via Lulu. So cool hey...........
