Hello,

There is no relation between tar file and jar file. tar is zip file made for linux OS, while jar is java file containing no of classes(Java Archiver)

<pedantic>Well it is actually from UNIX: its a shorthand extension denoting a tape archive</pedantic>. It's not specifically for any OS - you'll find utilities to decompress tar files for most OS's. Both tars and jars are simmilar in that they are compressed files. Also jar files don't have to contain Java classes - though its unusual for them not to.

Round these parts, posting the same question in multiple forums is bad practice. It can make it rather difficult to follow a conversation, plus folks spend time saying things that were just said.

Please continue over in the duplicate thread in the Linux / UNIX forum.
