Why does the American bride (or her family) bear the majority of the costs of the wedding?

I think it's so you don't end up with bags of Doritos and cases of Stroh's for reception fare.

What's wrong with Doritos and beer?
Or did I just make your point?

Not just American, I think this is true of at least most western countries.
I think it has to do with the old tradition of the Bride's father giving his daughter to the groom. It was the duty of a father to ensure his daughters were taken care of and so in many cases men had to be bribed to take on their daughters.
well that's my interpretation of it anyway.
If my dad paid for my wedding we'd have fish and chips for the wedding breakfast!

I think all over the world the bride's side bears the cost.... cant think of it any other way though it is a little unfair in these days. maybe it started out coz the guy had to look after the girl after marriage and so the girls parents paid for the wedding... who knows!!!

Hi ,
I think it is a reward for a husband to bear the burden of constant wife nagging in future. Also for some it is like winning TOTO.

"The West" is starting to modernize that ancient tradition a little, though. At least now the groom's family is supposed to pay for the rehersal dinner, the lunch for the line, and the honeymoon, if I'm not mistaken.

I only remember I was allowed by my mother-in-law to bring some of the flowers, if that wasn't too much to handle. Role model of a son-in-law that I am, I replied if I could get the priest to leave the mssage parlor early enough with me, we could get anything she wanted from the wholesale market "real cheap."
That was August, 1990, and she still doesn't have a sense of humor about that. Then again, I can't remember the last time she made a condescending remark, or spoke about me in the third person while I was in the room.
