string.length() == byteArray.length ??

If I have a String called string. And I do...

byte[] byteArray = string.getBytes();

then will the length of the byteArray always be equal to the number of chars in the string?

(I ask, as I am creating a servlet that returns a long String, and I want to set the 'content-length' header field, but don't know if I need to go to the expense of creating a temporary byte array to get the correct length or not.)

No, it won't. It depends on the character set and encoding. For non-Latin characters, there could be two bytes per character -- or even more, depending on the encoding in use.
