JDK - SDK - JRE what makes them different

I am confussed about the difference between all these pakcages. I know JDK means java development kit, SDK is software development kit, JRE is java runtime enviroment. But me-o-my, how are they different and when do you use one over the other?

Welcome to JavaRanch!

The main difference is that the JRE does not come with a compiler. The JDK and SDK are essentially the same thing. Sun started calling it the SDK later on.
