"lgreen",

There aren't many rules that you need to worry about here on the Ranch, but one that we take very seriously regards the use of proper names. Please take a look at the JavaRanch Naming Policy and adjust your display name to match it.

In particular, your display name must be a first and a last name separated by a space character, and must not be obviously fictitious.

Thanks!

I've just come back from holiday in India (Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab).

The TV and newspapers were full of Abhinav Bindra. He's single, and is now the most eligible batchelor in India. According to a newspaper people are calling his parents with marriage proposals...

Yeah, he is the only guy who made it possible to get a medal in olympics after a long wait time.
I am not sure highlighting this so much really inspires some one, but this is nothing to undermine Abhinav's success.Because the past incidents have shown that people winning medals got so much of attention that they were out of that sport never showed up again to get another medal.

Sushil Kumar gave India it's second medal at the Beijing Olympics as he won the bronze in the Men's Freestyle 66kg against Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan.

Isnt the olympics going to be over soon? They better win 1 each 'day'.

Singapore won a medal (a silver), and it looks like it is going to be the only one. The last time Singapore had any medal is 48 years ago.

Third medal for India, Vijender wins bronze

India have won three medals for the first time in Olympics with pugilist Vijender Kumar bagging the bronze after beating Ecuador's Carlos Gongora 9-4 in the quarterfinal of the 75kg middleweight boxing event in Beijing. This is India's first medal in boxing in the Olympic Games.

After Akhil Kumar and Jitnder Kumar disappointed, Vijender Kumar held his nerves and outplayed Gongora. With his sharp reflexes and sound defense, he did not allow his opponent to gain points.

Round 1: 2-0
Round 2: 2-1
Round 3: 3-1
Round 4: 2-2
Total: 9-4

If you consider ordering by gold medals, China is the winner:

Its interesting that all 3 medal winners and other worthy contenders were village folk from the north and had (with the exception of Abhinav)absolutely the worst training infrastructure imaginable(if you could call a tin shack on the side of a dirt road a training facility at all).

What do we people know other than Cricket? And for how long will this remain? Our mindset needs to change and accept the fact that Cricket is not the only sport played.

China is winner, no doubt it.

I for one doubt it. Here's some perspective on that, discussing how some of the ways in which this medal bonanza was achieved are contentious even within Chinese officialdom. The article also includes proof that Jamaica is the winner:

Our mindset needs to change and accept the fact that Cricket is not the only sport played.

Why? If people in some place are interested in certain sports, and not others, why is that bad? In my opinion, medal counts are a decidedly subpar way to measure a country's achievements.

As had been mentioned in this thread before, it's also a decision on how to allocate a country's resources, and -assuming that by "we" you mean India- I would respectfully submit that better ways of using the budget could be found, which would help more people.
