Thanks to Henry for clarifying.

To elaborate:

C features weren't added to C++ for marketing or to ease and promote adoption; rather C++ evolved from C largely because Stroustrup worked "down the hall" from Ritchie in Bell Labs. "Design and Evolution of C++" is probably one of Stroustrup's easiest-to-read books and gets into how and why C++ is what it is.
