2 months, 6 months, two years, who cares? What I care about is that it breaks down on a timescale similar to my lifetime, rather than say all of the history of Homo Sapiens.

What about lining your ceramic bowl with a large drip coffee filter and making the oatmeal in that? Filters can take significant heat and dampness without breaking down.

Or to shorten the soaking time add some white vinegar to the water.
