Every morning I read:
Luann -- great strip I've been following since I was a kid. It's about Luann (a 16 year old in highschool), her family, friends and what happens to all of them. The author, Greg Evans, mixes up story-lines with one-liner jokes and deals with funny stuff as well as more serious topics -- quite entertaining. Plus, Greg Evans just won the 2003 National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award (previously won by people like Matt Groening, Scott Adams, Jim Davis, Gary Larson).

Dilbert -- anyone on this site who doesn't know about dilbert isn't really a software geek -- plus any description I write wouldn't do it justice.

So -- what's your favorite daily/weekly comic strip?

Frazz is the first thing I read in today's newspaper.
Calvin and Hobbes is my all-time favorite.

Taking a trip in the Wayback Machine, I would go with Bloom County. These days, it has to be Dilbert.

It took me a really long time to learn to appreciate "Get Fuzzy." I did eventually warm to it.

But my fave is here.

Boom County used to be pretty good, but it's just bizarre now.

Max, perhaps , it's just that you are not so bizarre anymore.

Charlie Schultz' Peanuts is a favourite followed by Garfield.
I remember liking Andy Capp growing up. Don't see that anymore. It would be non-PC now. He and the wife would get into fisti-cuffs. The Beano as well.

Another strip with a ginger-haired Andy, Veronica, Betty was a favourite in school. Can't remember the name any more. Of course it's Archie.

They don't make comic books like they used to. Now we have Head Firsts.

And how could I forget Asterix and Tintin. I used to live in Southern Africa and we'd get them a decade after everyone else. So these would appear to be really old strips to most of you.

Bloom County was great for its first few years. But it got progressively sillier over time, losing much of its relevance. Apparently there was a disagreement between Berke Breathed and Gary Trudeau (creator of Doonesbury, another favorite), as Breathed was seen by some as copying Trudeau's style, with greater commercial success. So subsequently Breathed exaggerated the silly, preposterous aspects of the stip and decreased the political content, apparently to better differentiate the strips. And after that, Doonesbury seemed to follow in Bloom County's footsteps, becoming less realistic, more silly. (E.g. Mr. Butts and the various icons used to represent presidents.) Which was kind of sad, to see both strips lose some of what made them what they were. Though in the long run, Bloom County just kept on spiraling off into irrelevance, while Doonesbury is still around, and still pretty good. IMO anyway.
