What is better, being a small fish in big pond or big fish in small pond ?

In small pond, as fish is big, chances of getting caught in net are more.
In big pond , fish is just another small fish, who does not make much differenrce.

I think your perspective is wrong. The question is about opportunity, not about being eaten.

Wanting to be a small fish in a big pond indicates that you thrive on opportunity, and embrace the desire to act on opportunity and eventually work your way up to being a big fish.

Being a big fish in a small pond indicates that you like to be in control, and take charge of things.

I always ask that question on an interview.

As long as the water is fine and I have lots of food to eat and grow I dont mind which pond I am in.

Henry Rollins says size matters, William Shatner disagrees. (I can't get behind that - William Shatner from the album 'Has Been')

Chances of small pond getting dry are higher in summer in comparison to bigger pond.

IMO, chances of survival is better in big pond, less risk, more food and might be cleaner water(at least you have space to go to another side of pond)

Small pond is about more control, more risk.

I have another version of this story which I always believe is true..

Once upon a time there was a frog in a pond. It believed that his pond is the "World".
So it thought that it is the king of the world!
Once he happened to goto the Sea. Only then did he realise that there are bigger things in life to be done and a greater perspective.

We all live in our ponds We all need to venture out to the Sea!
Cheers!

But if one is happy in its pond, then why one should go out and go to the Sea at all ??

And I dont think, if one is happy in his pond goes out to sea just for the sake of it.

Even if he goes out, he goes out to just venture it,, and finally he is back home, happy in his small pond.

OR I am missing something ..

ha ha....
hey.. Ive been missing all this action for all this while.. nice to be back..

I think you are taking the whole pond and sea thing in its literal meaning!
The moral of the story is that one should always look for NEW challenges in life in order to achieve something.
The "Pond" represents a life without challenges and growth and the "Sea" represents to challenge oneself and to come out of the "comfort zone" and strive for self discovery and test ones limits!

If one is happy without taking challenges then he may well live in his own pond (own world). But in that case he would be deprived of seing a whole new world on the other side!

There is a famous quote from Richard Bach's book "Johnathan Livingston Seagul"- "The gul that flies the highest sees the farthest!"

Also I think there is a good book- "Who moved my Cheese".

Cheers!

'small fish in big pond' seems better..
+ Fish will get lots of space to explore ,play.. Fish can have good long swimming drive....
V/s...Big fish will get bored...
+ big pond Fish will can get more friends as compared to small ...

If we take this metaphore somewhat literally we would see that a small fish in a big pond does not have a great large space to explore. Instead if we look at what actually happens, a small fish will stake out a very small area and never go far from home. The real threat of getting into danger is too great to explore anything other than your rock.

However, a big fish in a small pond is able to travel to all corners??? of the pond and become an expert of everything about the pond.

Agreed!
BUT
What happens once he has "become an expert of everything about the pond." ?
The point is...

Should he remain there itself?

Should he venture out to the sea in search of higher challenge?

Will the chicken cross the road?

Will spiderman save the kid??

What will happen next?
.
.
.
stay tuned...

Just remember if the fish were to leave the pond for the sea, he would surely die due to the fact that freshwater fish cannot survive in salt water.

I think what George wanted to convey that fish was fit only for small pond, it did not need big pond at all.

And there might be a fish who is not for small pond at all.

Pond, sea, lakes....OMG.....I think the luckiest of all fishes are those that find their way into an aquarium.....don't need to worry 'bout food, water would be maintained absolutely clean and, unlike anywhere else, all forms of illness would be taken of and diseases treated....And, of course, it's a great treat for the human eye as well
