Hi all,

I recently went with my daughter into our library. While she heard some records on her own, I took one record by accident. The record was from 1973 and from an Irish folk band I never heard before The Dubliners. It was here that I fall in love with the Irish folk music.

I often saw competitions between Iranian, Kurdish and Afghan musicians, all in an atmosphere of friendship. Now the mentioned nations share a common heritage in music. But why not connecting the eastern with the western world of music?

Think of western and eastern musicians playing the same song. Each playing parts of the song with their traditional instruments. Can you think of how these connects people from different cultures. I've seen it, it's an unbelievable feeling you don't want to miss anymore.

I started to get a deeper sense of the Irish music with the best of ireland CD:

The Dubliners can be found at YouTube like here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cnzstOtW2k&NR=1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3dhLmDYVBY

To give you an impression of Iranian folk music look the Kamkar Kurdish family and their traditional instruments:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0iRcvni-Y4&NR=1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjgEMKZ_Q98&mode=related&search=

What do you think, would it work?

Hi Darya,

Thanks for your links, I will certainly check them out!

A while ago one of our moderators, Ersin Eser, sent me a link to Anouar Brahem's album "Le pas du chat noir". This is the best music I've ever heard!

P.S. Darya, if you do not mind, are you a boy or a girl?

I couldn't find Le pas du chat noir, but I will definitely hear some samples from him next time in town.

I have said this since College, I was a communications major, and one of the class was intercultural dimensions of communication. It was in that class that I realized that of all the forms of communication in the world, Music is the one that by far breaks across cultural lines than music. Even though you can say that different cultures music has different qualities, they still all use the same 12 tones, well sort of, I know Indian music uses lots of quarter tones, so they are actually using more than the 12.

Anyway, every culture can truly enjoy any other culture's music, and should.

I even saw a very nice Iranian version of the Irish Riverdance, but can't remember its name.

Hi Chunnard,

both are wonderful . I especially like that statement in Yanni's biography:

Yanni is, without a doubt, a musical phenomenon, one of those rare artists whose music defies borders and boundaries - whose music speaks to people of all races, all nations.

It's inevitable. I just wonder why we don't see much more often for the the broader public. Why only in Universities?

We have here a pub where a Iraq-Kurdish asylum seeker and violinist plays with a Spanish guitarist an Iranian Drum player, a German piano player and a German singer together. All this is organized by the Iranian-Kurdish pub owner and the German director of the town's music school.

Be sure, if I knew an Irish I track him to that place and give the whole an additional note . This is one of the happiest thing to me how people of different cultures enjoy one and the same thing.

Here is another story of me about the power of music. It was some time before the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan that I looked after an 8 years old Afghan boy who was send during Taliban time to Germany by a German organization for war injuries.

After the September events it was clear that the U.S. would attack the Taliban. My little Afghan friend watched from his hospital bed all news concerning Afghanistan and was very afraid for his parents. I always tried to calm him down.

And then all in a sudden Ahmad Shah Massoud's Northern Alliance entered Kabul with all kind of vehicles and loudspeakers on top of them playing all kind of music. We watched the news with big eyes and saw people dancing in the streets and full of happiness.

And my friend, with his fixateurs in his legs asked me whether his parents were safe. I lied a little bit and said it's over and all are free and safe (his parents were safe I heard later). Kabul was back to music . Four month later my friend was reunited with his parents.

Darya,
I also like Sharukh Khan. But do not allow your daughter to watch his movies alot....because almost in all his movies he runs away with the girl and gives the girl's father a hard time....
