Hi there I have been reading about the fun sounding cattle drive and was wondering - do you really have to pay $200? I have found the list of assignments would the lovely instructors not just enjoy nit picking for free?

We enjoy that already. Nitpickers, like all the bartenders and sheriffs, are volunteers. The $200 goes toward other costs of running JavaRanch (forum software, hosting, etc etc).
Most folks tend to think it's a pretty good deal, and I must admit, I agree!

PS Oops, almost forgot: welcome to JavaRanch!

I paid the US$ 200 for the Cattle Drive and considering the amount of help I have obtained from the nitpicking, it has been worth every penny. It must take some tens of hours in total for someone to look at my assignment attempts, and find all the little nits for me to pick out. The money goes to a good purpose, this ranch.
The education and discipline lessons you get doing these assignments (complete with nitpicking) will pay you back many times over throughout your career.
Ever think why you never get such a service from college tutors ? You should, because you pay much, much more!
