Go for the xps. It is damn good with portability and a serious machine for some good development. My friend has that and never heard of any complaints so far. On the other side, you might also try having a look at the new Lenovo notebook series. They have the new T series T410, T510, T410s, T510s which means the prices of the already existing T400, T400s and T500 should be a little down. So if you can afford a little bit more, then I'd say Lenovo is the machine to have. I have a Lenovo R61 which will be two years old by this May and till now I haven't faced even a minor performance problem with this machine. It is very robust built and a great value for money.

I have used a Dell XPS laptop but only for gaming. Though the performance was good I managed to burn its battery in a year.
As an aside and if have not read it already, you might also want to read this

The above specified thread mentioned that more pixels help productivity. So does that mean we should consider big display like 15'' for software development? Is 13 inch display small for programming?

@Jothi: No; it was 15" and it was all I had!

@Raj: IMO having a bigger screen with good resolution always helps, visually. No strain on the eyes; more real estate for details. In the end it is all a matter of personal taste.

14" should be very much ideal with respect to portability. Some of my friends who have a 15.4" screens find them too big to fit into most of the backpacks. Check the one from Lenovo as I mentioned in the posts above and they have a better quality for the screen resolution. I guess all depends on the graphics card and the make of the machine. With the models from Lenovo, I guess it should do fine.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
