I have a degree in business and IT and was wondering if this is enough to get a job as a java developer as I am self-teaching myself the trade. Or will companies want actual certificates saying I am trained in java, or does my degree supercede those certificates?

I don't have an easy answer for you, as it is really tough out there right now. It's mainly due to the economy, where more experience developers are willing to take less, and many are looking to retire later (after seeing their stock holdings battered). This is bad even for fresher from IT universities.

Hopefully, you have taken some internships while in school. This should give you some experience. And maybe some contacts who are willing to give you a chance. Also, you should use the employment fairs given at your school, as those events are for graduates, and employers go with the understanding that they are getting someone with no experience.

Make little projects at you home at you free time, so you will learn more. At interviews say it and you might get credits for that. Don't expect good paymants couse you are a Junior.

Once you get a new Job be sure that if you keep with you learning, soon you will get a better payment! [=
