Want to share how you managed to do that? Was it a setting in Mail or did you have to program your Mac?

Nothing too exciting. Here's what I tried, in order

Mail.app (Apple) can't do it (or at least no one has posted anywhere that I could find with a plug-in or hack or preference change)

gnumail (open-source) can, but is no longer under development and has other drawbacks that make it unusable.

Thunderbird (open-source/mozilla), I am told, would work, but I found it very unpleasant for other reasons (which I can't remember at the moment.)

sweetmail (now open-source) would work, but though it runs in class, there is no carbon version planned

Revolver (free as in beer) not localized in English and doesn't seem to have line-wrap options

yahoomail (yahoo) will allow the line break to be set up to 99 - This would have worked for everything I have written so far, but I really wanted no line breaks at all. Also, I dislike web-based email interfaces.

gmail (google) is also web based and can't do it anyway.

Mailsmith (Barebones software, $100) Does the trick just perfectly. I used to use it but stopped because it stores email in a proprietary database format. I dusted it off for the purposes of *sending* emails to the nitpickers.

I didn't try any X11-based or terminal solutions because they don't interface as nicely with the rest of the workflow. I am sure there are many freeware options there.

I looked around for something on Mail too, but no luck in any of the settings or searching the web. Argh.

It's too bad Thunderbird can't be your choice. I just checked and saw that Thunderbird allows you to set the width of windows used to send mail, and you can enter really big numbers (didn't test what actually works). I use it a lot and have been pretty happy with it.

Do you remember what it was that didn't do it for you?

But anyway, if Mailsmith works for you, then you're all set I guess?

Cheers,
Pauline

I just tried it again and for some reason it isn't playing nice with my ISP's mail server. That must have been the problem the first time around as well

Yes, although if anyone from Apple ever reads this post, they should not construe this as a statement of satisfaction.

Yeah, the fact that Mail doesn't have a setting for message width seems pretty lame...
