If you go to the official site of Lucene the first paragraph says this

Apache Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured text search engine library written entirely in Java. It is a technology suitable for nearly any application that requires full-text search, especially cross-platform.

If you need your application to have something like a built-in Google search functionality then Lucene is probably among the best solutions out there. Most of us only have to deal with simple SQL searches, but once you need the capability to search root words, add relevance criteria, etc then full-text search libraries such as Lucene become invaluable tools.
