BufferedImage drawing problems

Hello,

when i initiate object of Grid it draws the grid, later when i want to clear image or other stuff it doesn't, for ex: clear() function which clears the image doesn't work !, any other function which draws any other stuff on the buffered image doesn't work also

public class Grid extends JPanel  {

    int startPositionY = 5;
    int cellWidth = 40;
    int cellHeight = 30;
    BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(500, 500, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);

    int nColumns;
    boolean horizontal;
    boolean vertical;
    String input;
    String x;
    Graphics2D g2 = image.createGraphics();

    public Grid(int rows, int columns) {
        setBackground(Color.white);
        this.nRows = rows;
        this.nColumns = columns;
        if (rows >= columns) {
            this.vertical = true;
        } else {
            this.horizontal = true;
        }
        drawGrid();
    }

    public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
        super.paintComponent(g);
        g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, null);
        
    }
    public void drawGrid(){

        for (int i = 0; i < nRows; i++) {
            for (int j = 0; j < nColumns; j++) {
                startPositionX = startPositionX + 40;
                g2.setPaint(Color.BLACK);
                g2.drawRect(startPositionX + 10, startPositionY + 30, cellWidth, cellHeight);
            }
            startPositionX = 5;
            startPositionY = startPositionY + 30;
        }
         
        startPositionX = 5;
        startPositionY = 5;
        repaint();
        }


public void clear() {
         g2.setColor(Color.white);
         g2.fillRect(0, 0, getBounds().width, getBounds().height);
         repaint();
    }

Code looks reasonable. Post your SSCCE that demonstrates the problem.

In the past when I've wanted to "clear" an image I have just created a new image.
