According to wikipedia

"In computing, a distributed file system or network file system is any file system that allows access to files from multiple hosts sharing via a computer network."

But my doubt is I am able to share my files over a network without having any of the network file systems like samba installed in my PC.

I use NTFS in my windows 7 laptop and HFS+ in my mac mini.

Please clarify.

Windows can share local file systems via SMB. Samba is only needed on Unix/Linux which does not have the Windows software infrastructure built in. OS X, too, can share file systems via SMB and AFP (I believe) out of the box.

First of all thanks for your support. I am posting a small explanation incase anyone else is interested.

According to samba docs

"SMB, which stands for Server Message Block, is a protocol for sharing files, printers, serial ports, and communications abstractions such as named pipes and mail slots between computers."

Apple uses Apple Filing protocol (AFP) which includes SMB,NFS,FTP which helps to share files between mac systems.
