Hi All,

I can see a cow symbol against the post of some moderators. This is appearing in the left side where the users info appears.

Moving this to the "ranch office" forum -- as this topic is definitely not "meaningless drivel".

The cows are a sort of rating system. Certain members of the community can rate others on the quality of posts, and these are reflected as 'Cows' awarded to the poster. So the cows would represent a trust-factor for the people posting. Right now mostly moderators have cows because we were able to use them for testing. But I would expect non-mods will start to earn them now that the system is live and we keep getting quality posts

Other differences (from thumbs up). Cows can be earned for specific actions -- it doesn't have to be specific to a post. The system also provides listing of where the cows are earned, so we can use it to see the great work. Also, for the moderators, some of cows may be for testing purposes ...

Is is possible for non-moderators to see this list - at least for our own cows.
I just noticed I have 5 cows but I've no idea where they came from, so I don't know if my bribes personal marketing budget is being used effectively

At the moment we are trying to keep it private. This may change in the future.

I just noticed I got a cow! That's cool, but I agree that it would be nice to know how I earned it. If the idea is to encourage more of whatever that was, I need to know whatever that was.

Of course, if I got it for the general nature of my outstanding quality of being, I'll just go on being the exemplary model of humanity that I am (most particularly in terms of my humility, of course).

Regardless, thanks to whomever gave me my first head of cattle.

Personally, I think the not knowing makes them more fun. I have one, and I have no idea how i got it. I could probably hunt around and find it (since I am a moderator), but I LIKE the feeling of not knowing specifically. I just get to think "somebody thinks I did something awesome", and that's enough for me.

But most people who know me will tell you I'm weird like that.

Yes, there is exaggeration there, but essentially, cows are supposed to be more valuable.

Personally, the way I have been using them is :- Like the post, give a thumb. Like the post enough to like the poster, give a cow

Edit:- And I do like knowing where my cows came from

This thread has been awarded x cows

The cows are given to the thread, but not to the OP ?

The cow count on a thread, isn't the cow count for the OP. The cow could have been awarded to someone who responded to the thread -- who is *not* the OP.

Additionally, the cow count also includes some complex math based on view count. This is actually a point of discussion, as this means that the cow count on a thread may not be the total cows awards. In the future, this may change -- perhaps to some other counter (maybe horse shoes ... ).
