Most anime is beyond me. I enjoyed Highschool of the Dead and about half of Ghost in the Shell (I loved the first movie and the first SAC, the second movie and second SAC I just don't get).

Innocence is pretty high-brow; whooshed past my head too. An English dub might help. But I think SAC 2nd Gig is the best TV series ever made. Takes a few times watching through though. Heavy stuff; very nuanced.

I kind of put it down to not having some sort of cultural knowledge that would unlock some of the references or topics. Another example: I recently tried breaking into Macross/Robotech and I don't know what to make of the 50% of the time they spend on pop music.
After that I dipped into Star Blazers. The animation is better in the remake but I can't find a dub.
