when i performed the installation of websphere i did not find this file tracefile -- in the logs directory.
is there anything special i have to do for this file to appear

Denab,
One can disable the trace file appearing by changing the admin.conf in the bin of was and commenting the line for that.See if thats the case in ur pc, though i doubt this will be the problem
