I still don't know what to say.

My sincere condolences to the family and all his friends.

Although I don't know Phil, I'd like to offer my condolences as a member of the Java Ranch community. It is people like him that make this a great place to visit and share knowledge about Java and our other shared interests. I hope he has found a nice fireplace where he can sit and relax in the Big Ranch in the Sky.

Phil's enthusiasm and energy was felt by all, even those of us who didn't have much direct contact with him. So sad that you're gone.

Phil and I have worked together for a little year.

It has not been smooth and easy everyday, for both of us.

I know I will never forget this very special guy. He was the fusion between a mad genius, a restless speaker and the nicest person I've ever met - thank you Phil for having learned me to be nicer with people. His tenacity and perfectionism made him unbeatable ... until "mon corps me lache" as he told me ("my body let me down").

If he could have read all these messages, it would have been one of the best moments in his life. He was thinking (and talking) about JavaRanch night and day. It was a huge source of energy and satisfaction for him. It was also a path for a new career that was so promising.
Sure, you made him happy.

I was terribly shocked and profoundly saddened yesterday when I learned of Philippe's tragic death. I truly believed one of the bright lights in this world had been extinguished and I was left feeling the world had become a darker place due to his passing.

I've had a day now to digest this unwelcome news and I've come to the realization that I was extraordinarily fortunate to know Philippe, if only through Java Ranch. His was a first rate mind. He was a natural teacher. The power and clarity of his expression was matched only by the depth of his enthusiasm. He had a mastery of his adopted language that would be the envy of most native English speakers. He possessed a generosity of spirit that is both rare and precious. In his writing he demonstrated a kindness, a sense of humor, and a playfulness that often brought a smile to my face and I happen to believe that's no small thing.

I know he was an inspiration to me and I think to others as well. I think he has made me a better person by his example. He must have known that the world is a better place for his efforts. He has my utmost respect for what he accomplished.

I send his entire family, especially Virginie, Nic, and Max, my deepest condolences. I can't really imagine how terrible this unexpected loss must be for you and for his close friends. I believe the good that a man does during his life does not end when his life is over. In a sense the good Philippe did during his life will live on in the people who knew him and whose lives he touched. The gifts we received from Philippe can never be taken away as long as we remember them and honor his memory. I hope Philippe's spirit will continue to animate Java Ranch in the years to come.

Philippe, you will be missed and long remembered. Thank you so much for all you did.

George Marinkovich

I was not coming to Javaranch for quite sometime. Today I had some free time so thought of seeing whats going on here. While browing through some of the posts of SCJD forum and saw Andrew's message about Philippe. Nothing could have sadened me more than the news that Philippe is no more.
I had a couple of interactions with him in SCJD forum and somewhere here and there in other forums. I never knew him in real but he always left a touching impression on me with his positive attitude, very friendly and helping nature for everyone in the forum. I will miss him.

My condolences for his family and may his soul rest in peace.

My God! Phil? Dead? He was the nicest person I think I've met on Javaranch.

Oh hell it can't be.

Sorry for being so late. I kind of dropped off Javaranch for a while because of a recent loss of my own and taking care of family business.

I'm out of words. Life is just too sad.

My God, I was shocked reading this...

Phil was a colleague of mine in 2000-2001, when he was programming in Delphi.

He was the person who thaught me the finer art of Delphi-programming. It was an honour to have had him as my colleague and I still refer to him as my best source of professionalism in that language. I still remember the time he had for me after office hours to educate me, to show me his projects and his excellent coding-style, a level which i can only dream of.

Life's not fair... The heavens are lucky to have him...

Ciao Phil,
Koen.

I was browsing Kathy & Bert's HF Design Patterns book today and was greatly saddened to see the note about Phillipe's death. Phil helped me a great deal when I was working on my SCJD last year. He was also my #1 ally in the great 3-tier vs. 2-tier debate in that forum. It was always fun & interesting to read his comments on the many discussion topics. He helped a lot of people with insight and good humor.

To Phil,

I'll lift a glass and thionk of you tonght. You'll be missed. "The journey is the reward."

It's a shame that I've been in JR for a while but never knew Mr. Maquet. Map's weblog directed me here and ...

My condolence to Mr. Maquet.

And thank Map.

PS: Just read Paul Wheaton's post on the first page of this thread, I cannot stop my tears now....Long live Mr. Maquet's enthusiasm and unbeatable strength. God bless Mr. Maquet's family.

I'm off to Javapolis tomorrow (a big Java do in Belgium). I'd hoped to meet Phil in person and buy him a beer.

Sigh.

Thanks for the good memories, Phil. You are deeply missed.

I have been away from the SCJD forum too long! And a dear friend and mentor is gone!!!
Phil along with Andrew and Max was always there for me when I needed help while I was working on my SCJD certification. Like Ken, I bought the Head First Design Patterns Book. While browsing, I couldn't believe seeing Phil's picture and the dreaded word "late" attached to it! I said to myself this cannot be true. But sadly, it is as confirmed on the Ranch.
Phil will always be remembered for his kindness, openness, and originality by a lot of ranchers like me.
May God bless his soul and be with him and his family.
Bharat
