Hi.
I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.
How to upgrade FireFox 2.0.16 to FireFox 3?
Please, I don't want to loose my current profile, bookmarks, themes, addons ...
I found this but it is beta 4
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy-backports/i386/firefox-3.0/download
Thanks.

To keep from losing your Firefox configurations (bookmarks, plugins, etc), get the FEBE addon. I have used this addon to backup my configuration and replicate it to other machines, including my new desktop, new laptop, even taking the configurations between Windows and Linux.

(Sorry, but I have no idea on getting FF 3 for Ubuntu 7.10 - I simply upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04. But the the auto patch update hosed my system so now I have to either figure out how to fix it or reinstall. I'll probably reinstall because I want to move to 64-bit anyway.)

How did you upgrade to Ubuntu 8.4?
By the auto update feature? or you installed a fresh copy?
I hear that the auto update feature makes the system slower after the upgrade , is it true?

The auto-update feature hosed my system. So I wiped the disk and installed from the quickstart CD. A later patch update hosed my system again.

I would not in my right mind upgrade my Windows system - every upgrade I eve did was a clean install. Not sure why I though that it would be a good idea with Ubuntu (other than a very friendly dialog appearing asking if I wanted to upgrade...)

Ubuntu has a decidedly mixed record on automatic updates, especially on laptops I never could get my main laptop to upgrade from 7.4 to 7.10 and have it actually work. And yet the update code would not go from 7.4 direct to 8.4. So I ended up waiting for 8.4, doing a quick update from 7.4 to 7.10 and then immediately do the update to 8.4.

Since 8.4 is a LTS (long term support) I don't expect to ever update this laptop again. When it dies, I'll get whatever is current on its replacement.

I'm not sure I'll even stay in the Ubuntu world, I've had much better luck with pure Debian, and it doesn't change as often.

Mark Shuttleworth, the guy who pays the bills for Ubuntu, has said that making deliveries of new release on time is critical in his view. I think he is wrong, getter releases that work is more important than when. But he's a billionaire, so what do I know?
