Were not these (XMLHttpRequest, ActiveXObject etc) objects available before in Javascript???

Then why Ajax came so late or the name is given late or what???

I think that mixing a bunch of technologies to provide asynchronous solutions just took time to convince. The only sound of 'Javascript' makes lots of developers frown. And browsers incompatibilities too.
Solutions provided by companies like Google just kicked everybody's butt and boosted Ajax popularity.

...And IE only doesn't support XMLHttpRequest, so we need ActiveXObject.
