Almost all of the Apache initiatives ( Xerces, Xalan, Cocoon, SOAP implementation etc ) are indeed open source. Apache Software Foundation has more details on their website about how to get involved( www.apache.org )
Good luck!

Where can I find an open source compiler? I'd like to see the implementation. Thanks
