normalize() on DOM document

Hi folks,
could someone explain me the purpose of the normalize() method in the document class.
What does the method do??? I know normalizing from the context of RDBMS but in XML, haeh?!

Actually, Document inherits normalize from Node. It puts all descendent Text Nodes into a standard form. The main effect seems to be to discard all those annoying Text nodes created when you insert a crlf between elements.
