Data Encoding Validation

Hi All,
Is there a way to force data encoding restriction on the text of some fields of the XML? for instance, I have two fields, I want the first to contain English characters only, and the second Arabic characters only. I was thinking about the xml:lang attribute, but it seems that it's only there to provide the application with some additional information about the text, without coercing the field to contain only that data. So is there a standard way to do this? or I have to do it in my application?
