Hi, and welcome to the ranch.
There are 4 levels of people here at the ranch:
Greenhorns are people who are new to the site and have posted less than 31 times.
Ranch hands are visitors who have posted more than 30 times - you get automatically promoted after your 31st post.
Bartenders are people who have been asked by the managment to help out by moderating a forum - we have certain rights within the forums we moderate (like moving and closing topics) and for all of that we get acess to the world domination plans they are working on in the moderators only forum. Your best route to becoming a bartender would be to send me ... oops, ahh never mind....
Actually the best route to becoming a bartender would be to become a regular here at the ranch. Helping out others and being polite and courteous are big plusses!! Eventually you might be noticed and asked to volunteer.
sherrif's are former bartenders who have had a small portion of their brain removed and are now linked by cables to the java ranch server. Actually, sherrifs have more access rights than regular moderators (they can delete, move, and close posts in any forum), they also have access to the some of the other things on the server too.
hope that helps
Dave

They are not paid.. They are nice enough to donate their time to people like you and me. I think the servers are located in Boulder?

Sheriffs and bartenders are volunteers, not paid.

JavaRanch servers are located in Boulder (near Denver), Colorado USA.

We're paid in the satisfaction of having helped our fellow and aspiring java programmers in some small way.

Getting deep in here isn't it??

Bartenders are paid US$479,000 per year. Sherrifs get US$649,000 per year. Both get up to a 40% bonus based on performance. Of course, we also get stock options. At least that was the plan until the internet bubble collapsed.

Ashik,
I prefer staying myself, somehow I already accustomed to me. Had I been a Bill Gates, I would have made a plastic surgery of my face and bought a couple of passports with other names, and, especially, with other nationalities/countries of origin
