I think about this for a long time, and thought about posting in MO, finally decided to post here.
I saw a lot of celebration about someone reached posting of *000's. I calculated the number of one person who posted 1000 in less than 100 days...
Here is my minimized calculation:
1) 10 postings a day on average
2) At least 10 additional reading for posting each one, probably waaa...y above...
3) About 1 minute for each reading including thinking
4) At least 3~5 minutes for each posting, including searching, thinking, coding, typing, reading follow-ups, etc...
5) What is the time spend on average?
6) ...
If I am in that position, I'll start to worry:
1) Did I spend too much time here?
2) Is that a compulsive behavior or addiction?
3) Should we encourage people to do so?
4) Is this going to jeopardize someone's other part of life?
5) What if ... sees this?
6) ...
This is just my own thinking, and I want to encourage others thinking differently in the celebrating drums or fireworks...
It might be considered destructive to JavaRanch. Please feel free to delete this one. I'll not accuse you as *ist.
Thanks!
Roseanne
BTW, my postings including this one is 553. Just for my own reminder. Watch out, Roseanne!

1) Did I spend too much time here?
IMHO, no. I wish there were more hours in the day though.
2) Is that a compulsive behavior or addiction?
Humm... It depends who you ask. My girlfreind would say both, I say neither. It's more of a dedication to help others that is not without it's rewards. (I fully believe I got my current job strictly because of my contributions to JavaRanch)
3) Should we encourage people to do so?
No, neither would I discourage anyone. It's a personnal choice.
4) Is this going to jeopardize someone's other part of life?
I manage to keep the rest of my life going along with my contributions here.
5) What if ... sees this?
I show Her the import stuff, like this

6) Why would anyone devote that much time?
Again a personnal choice. I think the people who do, do so for betterment of others with the huge reward of betterment of themselves! I've learned more about Java finding answers for questions that I myself probably wouldn't have asked to begin with. End result I increase my knowledge as well.
7) Why recognize it as an accomplishment?
Why not???

3,000 posts is alot Personally, I've never found particpating to interfere with my real life.
There are many days when I don't post at all, other days when I'll spend an hour on one post and others where I'll post four or five times in an hour.
Guess it can be addictive at times but then nearly anything enjoyable can become addictive
And as Carl stated, it's a great way to learn

Excellent Dave....and i agree with Carl. Here we can express ourselves, share our technical knowledge and learn. We also can get aware of the current affairs....so i'll stick with it...

My family thinks so. I don't.

2) Is that a compulsive behavior or addiction?
Perhaps. People tend to do what makes them feel good, what enhances their sense of worth, or what they feel they need to do to get where they want to go.

3) Should we encourage people to do so?
We used to do that when there were hardly any people posting on JavaRanch. I think this is not necessary now.

4) Is this going to jeopardize someone's other part of life?
If it does, then someone's priorities are set wrong.

5) What if ... sees this?
If you are trying to hide it, then you are doing it either too much or at the wrong time.

1) Did I spend too much time here?
An hour a day is not too much, IMHO. Unfortunately I don't happen to have that much time to spend, if I could I would happily would.
2) Is that a compulsive behavior or addiction?
Depends on where you spend the time. if its MD, it could be either of the above
3) Should we encourage people to do so?
If the time you spend here, helps atleast one learn something new, or find a solution to something they need, its worth it. Yes, sharing your knowledge helps you learn even more.
4) Is this going to jeopardize someone's other part of life?
If it does, they shouldn't. Sometimes it does, that's why many of us don't get to hang around here more often
5) What if ... sees this?
what if?

6) ...

Well if it wasn't for posting so much and hanging around here, I'd get no Java in my life.
Unfortunately my work isn't using Java. Maybe my next job.

So are we supposed to start pitying you now instead of celebrating?
