try any of the following: (as suggested by google android)

* Social networking
* Media consumption, management, editing, or sharing, e.g., photos
* Productivity and collaboration such as email, IM, calendar, etc.
* Gaming
* News and information
* Rethinking of traditional user interfaces
* Use of mash-up functionality
* Use of location-based services
* Humanitarian benefits
* Applications in service of global economic development
* Whatever you're excited about!

My suggestion is to go over to monster.com, register, and look for employers interested in J2ME applications. That'll give you a bit of an idea on how J2ME is being used in the industry, and it might give you a lead on what type of application you might want to build. It will certainly give you a good idea of what a useful application might be.

The other benefit is it might really target you towards a certain job or industry when you complete your degree. It's always an added motivation to know that your academic work also has the potential for advancing your career.
