please let me know if setting up a server by
assigning a port number would cause your computer any security problems . Since I would develop the application from a workstation in network which is secured , would this be causing the network resources be available from outside . In simple words is it safe to develop the assignment from within a workstation PC without causing any security breaches .

If your company has a FireWall, and you are within the Network, and using RMI you are fine. Most likely your IP address and port are hidden behine the Firewall and can't be reached from the outside.
In this case you are fine.
