Mac OS X Performance Ideas?

I googled around and noticed alot of people complaining about Java running slowly but couldn't find any tips on speeding it up. On my iBook compiling takes 10 seconds and thats for a tiny little program. I fear larger projects more than 500 lines will take over a minute on my beloved iBook. and I can't play Runescape online even when RS is on low settings, its just SOO CHOPPY & slow at loading. Is there any way to speed up JRE or even compile times on my iBook without hardware upgrades? I am planning a RAM boost but I need to save up for it, 15 & no job :/

iBook Specs:

500Mhz G3
256Mb RAM
ATI RAGE II 8Mb AGP 2x

I never have any thing else running when I compile cept BlueJ, same for Runescape, just Safari. Thanks in advance

Well if you are running a java program, you can always set the -Xmx and -Xms for memory, and make sure that those values are always equal to each other, and is high enough for you application. 80% of most performance gains occur with tuning the JVM.

Also note that, sadly, G3 systems are quite slow by today's standards.
