Well, we're experimenting with the new google adsense banners. So far I don't think it's too bad. Most of the ads are relevant and they don't seem too obnoxious.
These are the kinds of ads that bring in income for every time somebody clicks on the links. So I guess we are running a bit of a risk that people won't click.
I do think it's kinda funny that as I type this I get a link for "Ultimate Bulletin Boards" and it talks about something you can hang on your wall!
What do you guys think?

I had noticed that the add was a new style, but hadn't really stopped to look at it. I guess I am kind of desensitised to adds on web pages now.
Doesn't seem to be causing any problems, so if there is any revenue to be made, then it makes sense to keep it I guess.

Any way to make the banner open a new browser window rather than replacing the JR window?

I wonder how these ads get selected. One ad I saw, was for a site touting a politically, religiously sensitive issue in India: the (forced?) conversion of Hindu Dalits (lower castes/"untouchables") to Christianity

I definitely prefer the text only presentation.
Whether Crystal Animal Figurines are relevant, I dunno. Maybe the ads get matched to stuff on the site and with all the other animals around here...
I clicked on the Cattle Drive Vacations Sure wish I could ride a horse.

What happened to the Google ads, please ?

Too many impoverished geeks visiting ?

Perhaps they can be be brought up in Blatant Advertising and/or MD, Book Reviews ?

Ebay is worth more than General Motors in stock market value now.
$30bn and $23.4 bn respectively.

The University of Birmingham this summer launched the first UK course on buying and selling on eBay. And it all started with a French wife's habit of collecting Pez dispensers.

Text ads are better than picture banners, especially the animated ones. I accept that they're a necessary evil to generate revenue for a free site like JavaRanch. I'm not sure that the ads I've seen could be described as relevant however, but then maybe I'm not the right person to commit on that as I'm with Andrew in that I don't pay any attention to them.

My main issue, which is not exclusively down to the ads, is the amount of space they take up at the top of every page (above the fold, as web designers would have it). That's compounded by the size of Moosey (who I do like ) and the wilderness of empty screen real estate to his right. On some of the forums, particularly Java in General - Beginner, the start of the list of postings doesn't even appear on the screen in 1024x768 mode. Now that's unforgivably poor page design...

I understand that some of that is down to the limitations of the UBB software but I still think you could reclaim 25-30% of the screen for us Ranchers without chopping down any trees.
