hibernate.properties vs hibernate.cfg.xml

Guys,

When we say that we can either use hibernate.properties or hibernate.cfg.xml for the Hibernate configuration, does it mean that when we use hibernate.properties way to configure, we need to explicitly add the mapping resources through the addFile() method on the Configuration object?? and at the same time when we use a hibernate.cfg.xml to configure, we can specify the mapping directly in it or if we don't specify it, we have to again use addFile() method on the Configuration object??

Am I right guys?
