I guess, because I am still new to Java I would like to know some of the practical applications? I am reading about things like cell phones and palm devices, but what else? Also this seems like something that could grow wildly in the next few years, but what do you think (Eric) board ?

What Java brings is the ability to run true applications on a device while still keeping those applications in a safe, contained environment. With cellphones you can thus have programs that can potentially still run even when the cellphone is out-of-range. Yes, this market will grow....

Carlton , it is very difficult to predict the future as you know. Uptill now Java ( Standard edition )was unstable , so many revisions were coming. Many bugs were to be fixed. After 5 years , now java has started stablizing. Now , people have started working on J2ME. It is still in nascent stage.
With Wirless World becoming more predominant in future & poeple becoming using mobile phones as jsut another utility & accessing personal services like bank accounts & other things , entertaintment etc. , Java Micro Edition defintely has got bigger advantage of Prtablity & Security which is inherent in Java , whether Standard Edition or Micro Edition.
Many Key players are working on J2ME. e.g . Motorola's iDEN phone will be using J2Me technology. There are many into pipeline. Same is the case for PDA'S.
There are other areas where this technology can penetrate. SmartCard is one of those areas. There are many areas in Which this can work.
But , one thing I would like to stress , in this rapid , fast internet era , nothing is sure , what will stay & what will vanish. For the time being , definitely java has got future.
I hope this is useful . Eric will definitely have his expert opinion. Am I Right , Eric ?
SHAILESH.
