I noticed that most of the drawXXXX methods from the graphics class are defined as abstract. Where is the implementation of these methods provided?
How come we can use the Graphics object to call all the drawXXX methods?

The javadoc for Graphics will answer your question.


Since Graphics is an abstract class, applications cannot call this constructor directly. Graphics contexts are obtained from other graphics contexts or are created by calling getGraphics on a component.

It is instructive to get the actual class that is providing the methods. Try putting something like the following in a paint method :
System.out.println( "using " + g );
Where g is the Graphics reference.
