Is it required to return hashcode() method a positive int value?

The statement says that the hashCode() method is required to return a positive int value. Is it always true?
Can any body throw more light on this?

Take a look at the javadocs for java.lang.Object - the hashCode() method.
It just says return an integer, nothing about it having to be positive.
