Clarification needed Shift Operator (Khalid Mughal-Old book)

1)The book states that the value of the left hand operand is not affected by applying the shift operator.
2)The number of bits shifted is always in the range modulus 32 for an int value and range modulus 64 for a long value.

I didn't understand what these two statements means Khalid mughal Old Book

int n = [B]p << 3[/B]; // 16 is assigned to n, but p is still 2
System.out.println(p); // [B]This prints 2[/B], because p was unaffected
 
2)
int q = 2;
int r = q << 50; // Same as [B]q << 18[/B] because 50 % 32 equals 18
 
long t = 2;
long w = t << 100; // Same as [B]t << 36[/B] because 100 % 64 equals 36
