It depends on what you call a static class.
If you mean only one instance per application, you could call the Singleton pattern an improved static class

If you think of a class containing only static methods, I would think of java.lang.Math. A final class containing static methods only.

From what I understand there is no such thing as a static class, only a static member that happens to be a class.
