Can you please explain, what is encoding?? why is it used?
which form of encoding to use and when??

there was a jsp where we didnt get expected results, but when we set encoding to UTF-16 in the page directive as
<%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-16" %>
things went OK.

where does this encodin matter??
